Kim Mitchell
Singer-songwriter Kim Mitchell is a true Canadian rock icon who has achieved gold and multiplatinum status over a long and storied career, starting as leader of the musically eclectic Max Webster. Post ‘Max’, Mitchell has sold over 1.5 million recordings and toured constantly over a lengthy solo career that remains creatively vibrant to this day. Along the way he won three Juno Awards for “Most Promising Male Vocalist of the Year”, “Album of the Year” and “Male Vocalist of the Year”.
He is a gifted and peer-respected guitar player as well as an acclaimed songwriter, having penned and recorded classic hits like ‘Go For Soda,’ ‘Rock N Roll Duty,’ ‘Patio Lanterns,’ ‘I am a Wild Party,’ ‘Easy To Tame’ and ‘All We Are,’ to name just a few - all songs that have become part of the Canadian musical landscape. Participating in a Kim Mitchell concert is like being at the live recording of a greatest hits box set which also often includes Max Webster gems like “Diamonds Diamonds”, “Oh War”, and “Battlescar”, an anthem originally recorded with his friends Alex, Geddy and Neil of RUSH.
Mitchell has the respect of peers, fans, and industry types alike. Just what does he consider his greatest achievement? “Shoot, that’s easy,” says Kim, “it’s in the couple of hours the band is onstage, being able to take people to a special place through our performance and music. When that happens, I’ve accomplished what I set out to do.” Legions of Canadian fans agree!

Kentucky HeadHunters
Once upon a time, in a deep and dark forest, in the Bluegrass state of Kentucky, not far from the village of Edmonton, stood a psychedelic shack where the only rock and roll band in Metcalfe County rehearsed. The year was 1968, and the band was called “Itchy Brother.” The shack was really a farmhouse now known as the infamous “Practice House.” And the deep and dark forest was a place on Richard and Fred Young’s family farm.
“In the early ’80s, we started to hang out in Nashville. Because it wasn’t known as one of the rock and roll cities, we had always avoided it like the plague. Our only bout with Nashville was a TV show called Young Country, said Richard Young. Itchy Brother played Robert Johnson’s “Crossroads” on the show in 1970 and though it was fun, “It opened our eyes and pointed our hearts in a different direction,” he recalls.
“We are who we are and that’s what makes us what we have become. From our life experiences and how we approach and interpret music is how we became a band that tells real life stories. We are a band of many styles—rock, blues, country, jazz, bluegrass, rockabilly, and other roots music. That is the foundation of our sound. Johnnie Johnson once told me ‘Music has no color.’ If I had to color the HeadHunters…I’d color us ‘music with a feeling.’” says Fred.
Kentucky HeadHunter albums include: Pickin’ On Nashville, Electric Barnyard, Rave On, That’ll Work, Still Pickin’, Stompin’ Grounds, Grass String Ranch, Soul, Big Boss Man, and Flying Under the Radar.

Harlequin
Harlequin was originally formed in the mid-seventies. After several demos and trips to Toronto, Harlequin was finally discovered playing in a tiny bar in Toronto by representatives of Jack Douglas, legendary producer of Aerosmith, Patti Smith and John Lennon. Ironically, the scouts for Douglas’ company had actually intended to see Goddo, the band playing downstairs, but were turned away due to a sold old show. Instead they retired upstairs to a much smaller bar – only to be blown away by the band, playing a high-energy set of strong original songs for only a handful of people. This chance meeting led to a production deal with Douglas.
With Douglas’ help, Harlequin signed a deal with CBS/Epic (home to Cheap Trick and Eddie Money) in 1979. The band proceeded to amaze everyone at the label by pushing the first release Victim of a Song (1979) to gold status through sheer hard work, incessant touring, word of mouth and solid song-writing. Songs like “Sweet Things In Life”, “You Are The Light” and “Survive” introduced the band to radio in many markets in Canada – especially Western Canada.
The second release, Love Crimes (1980), came with a bigger push from the label, and went on to go Platinum, powered in part by Harlequin’s biggest hit to date “Innocence”. Another track, “Thinking Of You”, became a staple of rock radio and a highlight of the live show.
One False Move (1982) cemented the band’s radio success with tunes like “I Did It For Love,” “Superstitious Feeling” and “Heart Gone Cold.” The fourth and final album, eponymously titled, featured a change of direction as well as producer – Alfie Agius, former bassist with The Fixx, replaced Jack Douglas. This album produced one single “Take This Heart” and the band’s only video, filmed at the abandoned Don jail in Toronto by Juno-winning Champagne Productions.
Unlike many bands of their era, Harlequin is still a staple of rock radio in Canada, where the band’s old and new hits still receive remarkable amounts of airplay.
The band’s current line-up consists of George Belanger, Nik Rivers, Derrick Gottfried, Darren Moore and AJ Chabidon.

Steve Earle And The Dukes
A protégé of legendary songwriters Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark, Steve Earle quickly became a master storyteller in his own right, with his songs being recorded by Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Emmylou Harris, Waylon Jennings, Travis Tritt, The Pretenders, Joan Baez and countless others.
1986 saw the release of his debut record, Guitar Town, which shot to number one on the country charts and immediately established the term “New Country.” What followed was an extremely exciting and varied array of releases including the biting hard rock of Copperhead Road (1988), the minimalist beauty of Train A Comin’ (1995) the politically charged masterpiece, Jerusalem (2002) and the Grammy Award Winning albums The Revolution Starts…Now (2004), Washington Square Serenade (2007) and Townes (2009).
I’ll Never Get Out Of This World Alive is Steve Earle’s 14th Studio Album and features the song “This City” which has garnered both Emmy and Grammy Award nominations. The latest album has been met with overwhelming critical acclaim including a 3 ½ out of 4 Star review in the Los Angeles Times while the New York Post stated that the album was “American roots music at its best” in their 3 ½ out of 4 star review.

Nazareth
Hard Rock super group NAZARETH needs no introduction. Often copied and frequently covered, but never duplicated, this band proves longevity is all about the music. From angry young Scots raging against the machine to trail-blazers of their genre, original members DAN MCCAFFERTY and PETE AGNEW are still keeping’ it real after forty years.
When they hit the big league their image – long corkscrew hair, loud flares, and platform boots – did not always sit comfortably with the folks back home, but the music was right on. Over the years the image has changed, but the long roster of hits remains, including “Razamanaz”, “Beggars Day/Rose In The Heather”, “Hit The Fan”, “Hair Of The Dog”, “No Mean City”, “This Flight Tonight”, “Changin’ Times”, “Night Woman”, “Expect No Mercy”, “Light Comes Down”, “Too Bad, Too Sad”, “Right Between The Eyes” and the quintessential “Love Hurts”.

Platinum Blonde
Platinum Blonde is back, but don’t call it a reunion. In reality, it’s more like the band has simply taken a finger off of the pause button with the release of their new album Now & Never.
Platinum Blonde have four albums that have collectively gone Platinum seven times over and garnered multiple JUNO Award nominations, along with an induction into the Music and Broadcast Industry Hall of Fame. In 1983, the group debuted Six Track Attack - an EP that became the ground on which the triple-Platinum selling LP Standing In The Dark was built.
Before the close of 1984 the band had invaded radio airwaves with four hit singles – "Doesn't Really Matter," "Standing In The Dark," "Sad Sad Rain," and "Not In Love." In 1985, the release of the follow-up album Alien Shores saw Platinum Blonde expand more broadly. The lead single "Crying Over You” peaked at #1 on the charts, helping propel the release to go Platinum five times over.
By the time their third album Contact was released 1988, the evolution of Platinum Blonde was beginning to pull the band in a new direction, with each member beginning to branch into the waters of solo projects. After their 1990 album Yeah Yeah Yeah, the band felt compelled to explore these newly emerging creative avenues in separate ways.
The panache and passionate soul of Platinum Blonde’s music is vivid in the 10 tracks that comprise Now & Never. Across time, the one constant of Platinum Blonde has always been an unquenchable yen to evolve. With Now & Never, the band that’s made a career of forging its own path continues to roam free.

Jo Dee Messina
The irrepressible spirit of country music has been in Jo Dee’s DNA since her childhood in Holliston, Massachusetts. She was first attracted to country in the music of Alabama and Hank Jr. as well as Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton and Reba McEntire. By 16 she had a band that included her sister on bass and her brother on drums.
Jo Dee gained attention out of the box with “Heads Carolina, Tails California” and “You’re Not In Kansas Anymore.” Her follow-up album, I’m Alright, exploded with its back-to-back-to-back chart-toppers “Bye Bye” (ASCAP’s Song of the Year), “I’m Alright” and “Stand Beside Me” made her a star.
Jo Dee won the ACM’s Top New Female Vocalist award, the CMA Horizon award and the nod for Most Played Country Female of 1999 from Billboard. The Burn album entered the Country Albums chart at #1, went platinum and earned two Grammy nominations. Hits like “Lesson in Leavin’,” “Because You Love Me,” “Downtime,” “Bring On The Rain,” “That’s The Way” and “My Give A Damn’s Busted” would cement her reputation as one of country’s most loved and enduring hit-makers. “To make it in this business, you either have to be first, great or different,” says living legend Loretta Lynn. “And I was the first to ever go into Nashville, singin’ it like the women lived it.”
As millions who read her 1976 autobiography or saw its Oscar winning 1980 film treatment are aware, Loretta is a Coal Miner’s Daughter who was raised in dire poverty in a remote Appalachian Kentucky hamlet. Living in a mountain cabin with seven brothers and sisters, she was surrounded by music as a child.
Among Loretta’s finest moments on disc are such empowering female statements as “You Wanna Give Me Lift” (1970), “I Wanna Be Free” (1971), “We’ve Come a Long Way Baby” (1978), “Hey Loretta” (1973), “Love Is the Foundation” (1973), and the hilarious “One’s on the Way” (1972).
In 1967, she began picking up various Female Vocalist of the Year trophies. The industry showered her with BMI songwriting honors, Gold record plaques, a Grammy Award and other accolades. In 1972, she became the first woman in history to win the Country Music Association’s Entertainer of the Year trophy.
She was inducted into the national Songwriters Hall of Fame in New York in 2008. She may have won a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010, but Loretta Lynn’s life is still a work in progress. She’s still out there on the road, still writing songs and still recording them as only she can.
“I ain’t a star – a star is something up in the night sky,” says Loretta Lynn. “People say to me, ‘You’re a legend.’ I’m not a legend. I’m just a woman.”
